Protect the Protest stands with Greenpeace
An attack on one of us is an attack on us all.
Greenpeace USA is being sued by Energy Transfer - the corporation behind the Dakota Access Pipeline - for $300 million. The lawsuit is a textbook Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) and a glaring attempt to silence those who speak out against Big Oil. It is also overtly racist in its erasure of the Indigenous leadership in North Dakota, as it includes false claims that Greenpeace orchestrated the #NoDAPL resistance at Standing Rock.
This SLAPP is a direct attack on all of us, and our constitutional right to protest and free speech. If Energy Transfer wins this case, it would set a dangerous precedent and facilitate future attacks on unions, activists, journalists, and protesters. Whether Energy Transfer wins or not, the rich and powerful fossil fuel executives think that a lawsuit of this magnitude will silence us through intimidation alone.
We are not going to let that happen. Big Oil is trying to intimate us, but we are not scared.
Greenpeace USA is a member of the Protect the Protest coalition, and we stand with Greenpeace in the face of this meritless lawsuit. We will not be silenced because the right to protest and to speak out against issues of public concern are rights guaranteed to us by the United States constitution. We will not let the fossil fuel industry take away our rights because they see them as a threat to their profits.
