Green Groups: Suits to Silence Them on the Rise

In this article for Bloomberg Law, Peter Hayes describes a SLAPP filed against residents of Uniontown, Alabama who opposed the dumping of toxic material in a landfill in their community. While it’s difficult to estimate the number of SLAPPs, it’s clear that this case is “just the tip of the iceberg.” Hayes reports on the expansive scope of those who are affected by SLAPPs.

He wrote, “The threat of chilled speech posed by litigation can go far beyond environmentalists. It can extend, for example, to members of the press, as well as others such as consumers seeking to share information about products and experiences, and workers airing grievances about their employers.”
