I have been sued and need help finding a lawyer
Thank you for contacting the Protect the Protest task force. Please read the following background information before you submit your request for support. All of the information that you provide in this form will be kept confidential and will only be shared with your approval.
In 2018, we created the Protect the Protest task force to defend those working in the public interest – activists, community organizers, civil society organizations, and journalists, among others. If you have been sued or threatened because you voiced your opinion or published your research on an issue of public concern, then you might be facing a SLAPP. SLAPPs are an abuse of the legal system: they are used by powerful entities who want to silence your constitutionally protected free speech rights by dragging you through expensive, intimidating, and time-consuming litigation.
Protect the Protest is a completely not-for-profit initiative. There is no cost for requesting these services. Please note that if you request referrals to a lawyer, the referrals that we provide are free, but you will need to discuss cost arrangements with the lawyer that you choose to hire. We make every attempt to help you find a lawyer who can provide pro bono or low-cost legal support. We also have a legal defense fund to which your lawyer can apply to fund the early stages of your lawsuit.
We cannot guarantee support for everyone who makes a request, but we will review every application carefully and respond to all submissions.
